Introduction to Computers and Word Processing

Duration: 5 days (5 hours per day)
Who is it for? This course is an entry-level training course into the computing field. It is designed for those who have minimal experience working with computers as a prerequisite before proceeding to more advance computing courses. The course will develop a strong computing foundation. A certificate of attainment will be awarded at the conclusion of the training.
Course Description: The training will first give participants an introduction to computers and word processing (Word), followed by learning activities in:
- Working with spreadsheets;
- Working with databases;
- Developing business presentations in which students explore fundamentals of presenting electronically based business reports in PowerPoint.
Students are provided with a handbook containing all exercises used in the course. This is essential for reference when later applying the skills learned.
Participants work in small groups and individually on the computers.
Participants carry out practical exercises in all topics.
Outcomes: The outcomes of the training include:
Word processing;
- Recognize the relevant occupational health and safety practices associated with using a Personal Computer (PC)
- Describe basic computing terms and concepts
- Manage computer files
- Create, save, retrieve and print a word-processed document
- Use manuals and on-line help to solve problems
- Create and print simple mail-merge documents
- Apply recycling techniques to minimize paper waste

Assessment: For each unit (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) within the five day training, the following three assessments are expected:
- Exercises: From the learning guide you will create and modify a number of documents. All of these documents are to be submitted to your lecturer for assessment.

- Assessment form. Complete at the conclusion of the training with your lecturer to demonstrate your mastery/knowledge of all the listed items.

- Short report. Prepare a short report related to your workplace using the specified program software. Word documents are to be 1000 words in length and follow generally accepted short report layout.

Facilitator’s profile: Nick Mleczko brings to his work extensive experience in Information Technology. Prior to coming to Divine Word University (DWU), Mr. Mleczko worked as an Information Technology Lecturer and IT Section Head at Lae Technical College. At Lae Technical he taught Computer Information Systems, Courses in Diploma and Technical Trade Certificate Network Installations and PC Maintenance. He currently lecturers in the DWU Faculty of Flexible Learning. Prior to coming to PNG he worked as a course designer and trainer for Moorabin TAFE in Website Development for Small Business in Melbourne, Australia. He also worked with National Australia Bank, Melbourne as its Senior Analyst Programmer. He has conducted trainings in Internet, Web Page Construction, Word/Excel/Access programs.
Course fees include course materials, morning and afternoon tea, and lunch. All course fees are inclusive of GST.
